He has spent his life as a dedicated public servant. A resident of East English Village for more than 44 years, he was elected to the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners for District 4 in November 2013 for a four-year term and re-elected in 2017. He has served in a number of leadership positions on the Commission in including three terms as Chairman and two as Vice Chairman.
Commissioner Bell is a graduate of Northeastern H.S. and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Central Michigan University.
After leaving high school, he worked at Chevrolet Gear and Axle leaving to join the army where he saw action in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1969 with the rank of Sergeant.
In 1971, Mr. Bell joined the Detroit Police Department. His last assignment was with the Office of Chief Investigator on the Board of Police Commissioners. Mr. Bell retired from the DPD as a Lieutenant in 2003 after 32 years of service.
